History of The Ashram

Ananda Bhawan Ashram - Entrance Ananda Bhawan Ashram - Samadhi Mandir

Ananda Bhawan Ashram was founded on 7th April 1930 (Ram Navami) by Shri Shri Gurudeva at a rented house named “Lalkuthi” at Suriya, Hazaribagh Road Station, Giridih, Jharkhand.

Shri Shri Gurudeva purchased the Ashram land of 2 bighas 12 kattas at Suriya, near the “Lalkuthi Ashram” on 7th November 1931 and laid the foundations of the Mandirs of Shri Shri Anandanmoyee Maa and Shri Shri Madanmohan on 11th February 1932 (Shri Panchami).

After the Samadhi of Shri Shri Gurudeva on 22nd April 1932, the remaining work of Mandir, Bhaktabas, Samadhi Mandir and Shayan Mandir of Sri Sri Gurudeva was completed by the devotees.

  1. 1930

    Ananda Bhawan Ashram was founded on 7th April 1930 (on the auspicious day of Ram Navami) by Shri Shri Gurudeva at the house of Late Dr. Jogesh Chandra Sen named “Lalkuthi” at Suriya, Hazaribagh Road Station, Giridih, Jharkhand.

  2. 1931

    Shri Shri Gurudeva purchased the Ashram land of 2 bighas 12 kattas at Suriya, near the “Lalkuthi Ashram” on 7th November 1931

  3. 1932

    Shri Shri Gurudeva laid down the foundations of the Mandirs of Shri Shri Anandanmoyee Maa and Shri Shri Madanmohan on 11th February 1932 (on the auspicious occasion of Shri Panchami).

  4. 1932

    Samadhi of Shri Shri Gurudeva on 22nd April 1932.

  5. 1932

    The construction of Mandir, Bhaktabas, Samadhi Mandir and Shayan Mandir of Sri Sri Gurudeva completed by the devotees.

  6. 1947

    Donation of property by Sister Uma Mitra near the Ashram at Suriya, measuring around 27 acres (approximately 80 Bighas),

  7. 1955

    Decision to print ‘Ananda’ as a memoir of the teachings, life & remembrances of Shri Shri Gurudeva

  8. 1956

    Printing of the First Volume of ‘Ananda’

  9. 1957

    Printing of the Second & Third Volume of ‘Ananda’

  10. 1958

    Printing of the Fourth Volume of ‘Ananda’

  11. 1975

    Printing of the Fifth Volume of ‘Ananda’

    Ashram Office shifted from Atul Bhavan, Moshak Chawk, Bhagalpur - 1 to 92, Hazra Road, Kolkata – 26.

    Registration of Ashram under “West Bengal Society Registration Act”

  14. 1987

    Ashram Office shifted to 701/G, Block – ‘P’, New Alipore, Kolkata – 53.

  15. 1996

    Swami Mahimananda Saraswati took Sannyasa

  16. 1997

    Ashram Office shifted to 12/1/5, Monohar Pukur Road, Kolkata – 26.

  17. 1999

    Foundation of ‘Smriti Mandir’ at Bargadda, the birth place of Shri Shri Gurudeva.

  18. 1999

    Reprint of the First Volume of ‘Ananda’

  19. 2002

    Foundation of ‘Ananda Jyoti Mandir’ at Rishikesh

  20. 2002

    Construction of NandaMoni Abasan – Phase I

    Yearlong celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of Ashram Foundation all over India starting with Ram Navami Utsav of 2005 at Suriya and ending with Shivaratri Utsav of 2006 at Rishikesh.

    Beginning of construction of NandaMoni Abasan – Phase II.
